Nafasi Art Space (Nafasi) was set up with support from the Danish Center for Culture and Development (now discontinued) to become a leading contemporary art center in East Africa. Based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, it provides a platform for artists to develop visual arts through the production, exchange and exhibition of experimental art, locally, regionally and beyond.
Nafasi – purpose and activities
Nafasi is a critical creative and learning environment for stimulating the discovery and creation of contemporary art in Tanzania through art production and open, active exchange between the Nafasi collective and the local, regional and international (art) worlds.
An active public program reflecting the activities at Nafasi lets visitors participate in, experience and be challenged by contemporary art.
An active collective of contemporary visual artists forms the core of the center, sustaining the activities, lobbying and advocating for (contemporary) art in Tanzania and stimulating cross-cultural discourse.
Nafasi has started implementing the learning part of the project by introducing an artist-in-residence program, workshops and artist talks. Moreover, Nafasi has launched outreach programs to introduce the public to contemporary visual art. Programs include art exhibitions, film events and public, participatory art events. The events are well visited, and in the two years of its existence Nafasi has built up a database of close to 2,000 people.
